Dear Sierra Club Voter,
Over the last several years, and more and more each day, we are witnessing our country and our world in crisis. However in crisis comes opportunity. The Covid-19 pandemic shut down our lives in an instant but it also shed light on deep-seated racial inequities in our society and the need for an economy that puts people over profits. While war rages in Europe and the threat of autocracy looms large around the world, the connections of war and our reliance on fossil fuels is being laid bare. And though the latest climate report lays out the dire effects of climate change it also states that the answer is clear: reduce emissions, conserve and restore our lands and water and work to protect the most vulnerable.
And that is the Sierra Club’s mission! Vote Forward Sierra today!
We must unite to seize the opportunity to reduce the greatest impacts of climate change by ending our reliance on coal, oil and gas. We must protect 30-50% of our lands and waters so that nature can be part of the solution. And we know that people of color and low-income folks will experience the worst impacts of climate change, so our solutions must be based on principles of equity and justice.
The movement to tackle the impacts of climate change must be interlinked to the movement to end racism and income inequality and the fight for democracy here at home and around the world. We must widen perspectives, build allies, broaden the movement, build a bigger we in order to protect the planet and the people and animals that inhabit it. We need a Sierra Club that can help build this winning movement.
The Forward Sierra candidates recognize and embrace the fact that the world and the Sierra Club are in a transformational moment in our history. They are deeply committed to our mission and to creating an inclusive environment for volunteers and staff. They recognize that to build a just and healthy world, we must start with ourselves and our organization. The Sierra Club must be a place where people from all walks of life feel welcome–whether on a hike or in a boardroom-and that the treatment of our staff, volunteers and allies must be rooted in integrity and love.
By contrast, the petition candidates are running as a slate on a platform promising to "change the current direction" of the Sierra Club and to reverse or slow many of the critical efforts underway to make us a stronger, more unified, and more inclusive organization. The petition candidates are specifically running against recent efforts to ensure accountability to address damaging and toxic behavior at every level in the organization.
In Sierra Club’s most important election in years, Forward Sierra are the leaders our organization needs - to help Sierra Club’s Board of Directors rise to the urgency of the climate crisis while deepening our commitment to equity and inclusion. We need to elect candidates who embrace these values and support needed reforms, not ones who are committed to taking us back.
Vote Forward Sierra Today.
